Air Handling Unit - How Plug Fans were Invented

For the modernization of telecommunication distributing centre in Germany, a large number of Air Handling Units and Air Handlers was required. The modernization was agreed on the condition of a substantial reduction of yearly energy costs. The Original belt driven fans had rather high energy demand causing high energy costs. There was hardly and belt driven system which could satisfy the requirement of the user.

The use of direct driven fans without housing ( generally known as Plug fans) reduced the energy demand to a large extent. In addition to this, annual servicing cost also reduced considerably as Plug Fans are maintenance free. The manufacturers and users of AHUs recognized the advantages of Plug fans and modified their equipment accordingly.

Punker GmbH & Co., Germany played a major role in introducing the use of direct driven fans for AHU applications. In Europe, the Plug fans are very extensively used for Air Handling Units as well as for Air Handlers.
